Mighty Oak

Carol Alleman 2004
Bronze
4 x 5
$800

From the tiny seed grows the mighty oak. What seeds might you be planting or sowing this season that just might grow into a “Mighty Oak”? It is often the most simplistic, quiet acts that hold the deepest potential.

Three oak trees, a divine number, form the canopy of “Mighty Oak” while twelve acorns feed the roots of the trees. Twelve is a tribal (elder) number, (as well as symbolic of twelve zodiac signs, twelve months of the year, twelve days of Christmas, twelve disciples, twelve fruits of the Tree of Life, etc.) and was intended here to represent the presence of those before us who held the courage and wisdom to nurture many seeds that have bore fruits – fruits of great diversity which we collectively enjoy.

“Mighty Oak” is symbolic of appreciation, courage, and trust. Appreciation for all the seemingly tiny seeds sown before us, courage to sow our own unique seeds, and trust in the power (the rippling effect) of all we choose to do and say.

The piece was hand-built in water-based clay using coiling techniques before beginning the lost wax process of cast bronze. As with all my work, a mark resembling a broad, cursive “Z” (or “N” on its side) can be found beside my signature. This mark is my symbol for the “Wind” or Spirit always moving within and around us. It is placed next to my signature on every piece as a way of remembering and acknowledging that I never create alone.
