The buffalo population in the United States exceeded forty million in the year 1800. By 2000, the population was only 2,500 animals. Now at nearly 350,000, the buffalo population is beginning to recover. This painting, like the title of the show, is about big moves. The painting was done using a grid pattern, and enlarged from a small image, similar to the population of this ‘big’ animal, which is also growing. The calculations in the painting are calculations I used to enlarge the work and create the grid pattern. The hand represents the shaman’s hand in Native American culture. He would blow pigment onto a cave wall as his signature next to a drawing of a buffalo done to encourage good fortune during the hunt. |
